I n 2004, when John Hope Franklin asked me to become his new co-author of From Slavery to Freedom, he passed the torch to me for the ebook’s revision. Now in its ninth edition and more than sixty years old, From Slavery to Freedom is a new PDF. Its chapter titles are new, as are also many of the topics, historical actors, and scholarly fi ndings throughout. Although John Hope Franklin did not live to see its publication, he read most of the chapters and over the past years heard me speak about the revisions at his dining room table, at conferences, and in other settings. He was pleased with the direction the revision was taking and I believe, would have been proud of the final result.

About the Author:

John Hope Franklin, was the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of History, and for seven years was Professor of Legal History at Duke University Law School. A native of Oklahoma and a graduate of Fisk University (1935), he received the A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Harvard University (1936 and 1941).
